Helen McIldowie-Jenkins

Helen provides flexibly structured residencies for schools and colleges in the U.K. aimed at integration with GCSE Art and Design course work, and opportunities for cross- curricular activities with Religious Studies and School Chaplaincy.
Residencies can run for part or all of a school week and offer pupils the rare opportunity to experience painting their own icons using the traditional materials and methods of medieval panel painting - including gilding with genuine gold leaf and mixing their own egg tempera paint. This medieval art practice is contextualised with an art historical overview of Byzantine art, the meaning and function of icons and their relationship to western art via iconographic transmission.
Icon painting residencies and workshops can also be structured with specific art historical focus as part of AS History of Art/Art and Design Foundation courses. Workshops and seminars can also be booked on a one or half-day basis.
Residencies have proven to be an immensely enjoyable, memorable and inspirational experience for pupils and teaching staff alike. Please contact Helen on for details on cost, programme, availability and/or references.
